Black Forest

I spent the last few days from friday till yesterday morning in the southern Black Forest together with my parents for a little needed vacation. I haven't had the chance to pay a visit to this wonderful place for quite some time now (since March/April 2005 to be exact), and it was about time I got there again ;-)

I had planned to spend lots of time outside hunting for some geocaches in the area. In the end, I only managed to find three and logged a couple of DNFs, but it was fun nevertheless, despite the unstable weather1). At least it was sufficient to get my mom interested in the hobby, so I might have found a new cache buddy :-)

While out in nature, I also once again made use of the panorama assistant of my trusty Ixus and Hugin/Panotools2) with the result of two panoramic views of Muggenbrunn and Hofsgrund3):

Hofsgrund5)

Besides this, I didn't take many pictures this year (also thanks to the fact that my cam decided to have an empty battery on one of the photographically more interesting trips and the backup was back at the appartment :-?), but I want to share a few of them anyway:

Left: Cows in the foreground, Feldberg in the background. Right: More detailed view of Muggenbrunn6).

Left: View from the Schauinsland towards Upper Rhine valley. Right: Interesting tree I stumbled upon.

Update: Added download links to the fullsized versions of the panorama views.

1) during the five days I spent there we had rain/snow, rain, sun, storm, sun
2) and the usage now really is dead simple I have to say
3) yes, that white stuff on the hilltops is indeed snow, I didn't expect to encounter any but was pleasantly surprised when I did
4) download fullsized version (JPG, 6638x978px, 1.9MB)
5) download fullsized version (JPG, 3576x999px, 1.3MB)
6) can you spot my car? ;-)

Mini-Review: Garmin Vista HCx, 2008/12/08 10:43 (Trackback)
With one of his recent blogposts Andi reminded me of a review of my newly acquired GPSr I still had to write. So without further ado, let's take a quick look at the Garmin Vista HCx. Since I bought my entry-level Garmin etrex yellow back in winter of 2006, I've been drooling over the more powerful GPS devices with their integrated maps and their better GPS chipsets, namely the GPSmap 60CSx with its SIRFstarIII. Alas so far a real excuse to buy one of those more expensive toys was something I co…

Gahh… now I'm even more jealous. I need a vacation badly!

Does it help if I tell you it was way too short and I don't feel very relaxed? ;-)

Welcome back, nice pictures :) Did you drive the whole way yourself with your car?

fooselfoosel, 2008/10/09 19:13

Yes :-) All in all, with the trip down there and up again, plus some km while going from cache location to cache location, I added a bit more than 600km to my total so far driven myself in my own car, and I passed the 1000km milestone now as well :-D

Side note: 2.5 continuous hours of driving Autobahn is one of the most boring things I ever experienced, only topped by some of the lessons back in school ;-)

Wow, awesome pictures. I think I'll have to visit the Black Forest someday next year with my bike for a weekend or two :-).
